Using COBIT To Manage Sentinel Events

The Joint Commission requires healthcare provides to have a plan to identify and respond to sentinel events which are process errors that result in the potential for or actual death or serious bodily injury to patients.  With the proliferation of EMRs, many patient care processes are being administered and monitored electronically.  COBIT or Control Objectives for Information Technology was developed to provide a govenance structure for process owners.  It is particularly suitable to helping EMR and IT support owners deal with process risks in an EMR system.

Assessing Individualized Harm for HITECH Breach Notification Decisions

The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (the HITECH Act), enacted as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, requires heatlhcare organizations to notify individuals of all breaches of their personal health information that the organization has determined poses a significant risk of harm to the individual.  To make such a determination, healthcare organization are now required to assess risks from the patient's perspective.
